My kind of art

What does art mean for you? Well, in my opinion, art is a way of expression and the best way to convey your feelings. For this article I have chosen sportive dance as a form of expression, and why? Because since I was a child I've loved dancing.

At 5 years old, my mom enrolled me at my first training which became one of the thousands. Twice a week, 4 hours per day I had to work hard and try to do my best to succeed. After 2 years I went to my first true competition with my dance partner. We were on the lowest category, but for us it was so important. We had a good start because as soon as we stepped on the dance ring for waltz, my partner slipped and fell. The other pairs on the ring saw us and started laughing because we were 2 "fluffy" children who had just fallen. That made us ambitious and we danced waltz, quickstep, cha-cha and jive.

After that, every weekend we had competitions everywhere, in every region, where we competed with other 40 pairs across the country. In time, the tiredness became my friend and the training room, the same, but I couldn't let it down, because I worshipped what I was doing and the fact that I could grow in a beautiful way with new friends and activities made me so happy. At 9 years old I started the trainings in another city, 40 km away from Campina. At the beginning, it was hard, because the trainings were at 6 p.m. until 10 even 11 p.m. and the next day at 8 in the morning I had school, but it was fine for me.

I reached the E category and I learned 2 new dances: samba and Viennese waltz and I was so excited. The trainings had intensified, and I had had to travel the 80 km 3 or 4 times per week just for trainings. It was more serious then, because I had reached the D category and I had to learn 8 choreographies harder than the previous ones: waltz, Viennese waltz, quickstep, tango, samba, rumba, cha-cha and jive. The problem here was the fact that my partner quit, and I had to take it from the beginning with a boy from Targoviste who was still in the E category. Because of that, he also quitted, since it was too hard for him and at 12 years I also quitted because I couldn't start again with another boy from a lower category and then, a few months after, have him leave again.

At the same age, I started to learn traditional dance because I couldn’t just stay home and do nothing, being used to doing something in every moment of my life, and because here I don’t really need a partner, I can be on my own and I don’t depend on somebody else in the way I needed, I am still dancing and I can develop my dream.

Dance has taught me a healthy way to live, and even though you don’t go to the gym, dancing is a sport, and in the same way, an art. You don’t need to be a professional dancer, all you have to do is turn the music on, let the vibe go though and dance.
